The publicity campaign for the LHC is parallel to that of NASA and Artificial Intelligence. It's a sales pitch angled toward getting everyone all emotional about solving mysteries and exploring the universe, and like NASA nonsense, I suspect the real motives are much different.
"We" didn't go to the moon to "slip the surely bonds of earth and touch the face of god," NASA went there to plant mirrors for lasers to reflect off, so we could measure its distance precisely. For what reason? Who the hell knows, because they never even told us that much at the time, let alone what the purpose of doing so was--likely because spending a quarter of a TRILLION dollars to put some mirrors on the moon would likely have pissed off everyone in the nation--everyone who would also go along with anything that sounds like a sermon. These gay ass motivational speaker sermons are not there to conceal the truth rather than explain it.
I strongly suspect that several governments teaming up and investing billions of dollars are not doing so for some abstract feelgood bullshit, or to discover something that will render all those billions worthless just after discovery, but for a practical reason they're not telling anyone.
So, what is the real reason they're doing this? What is worth $5 billion and 10 years of work followed by another billion in upgrades and 2 more years of work? Are they still trying to "slip the bonds of earth and touch the face of god" or some shit? No, we've heard that one already, so I doubt it, and I'd really like to know, because whatever the truth is, it's likely a lot more interesting then their gay fucking sermons on pushing the bounds of science and exploring the universe. Everything people do scientifically pushes the bounds of science and explores the universe--but it's always done to gain a technological advantage, so fuck off with the motivational speaker pep talk, and tell us what the damn thing is for please.
My guess would be weapons, medicine, or communications.
