A Dick Hanging Out In Willoughby: Monday 20021121

Sometimes it's not our understanding that fails us, it's our imagination.

I learned this, at least, by my experiment; that if one advances confidently in the direction of his dreams, and endeavors to live the life which he has imagined, he will meet with a success unexpected in common hours. He will put some things behind, will pass an invisible boundary; new, universal, and more liberal laws will begin to establish themselves around and within him; or the old laws be expanded, and interpreted in his favor in a more liberal sense, and he will live with the license of a higher order of beings. In proportion as he simplifies his life, the laws of the universe will appear less complex, and solitude will not be solitude, nor poverty poverty, nor weakness weakness. If you have built castles in the air, your work need not be lost; that is where they should be.

Now put the foundations under them.

NOTICE: I'm tired of wasting my time citing authors I quote, since they can be discovered literally with the click of a mouse, so when you see anything in italics, assume it was likely written by someone else, and I suggest highlighting and searching to discover this, if it's important to you. For my purposes, most everything I quote is for its functionality, so I don't really care who wrote it.

A Dick Hanging Out In Willoughby: Wednesday 20021116

I've had a lot of people call me a dick in my life, so for the sake of adolescent humor, I'm going to go ahead and selectively believe them when titling this post, because as far as I can tell from looking out at the world, truth is whatever gets you what you're after. Besides, I'm on kind of an investigation of curiosity about Willoughby and the surrounding area, and investigators are often called dicks, so I'm going to just go with that.

I'm happy as a clam here in the Twilight Zone, and every day is better than the next. Wait, I think I fucked that up. No, every day is better than the last--that's it.

I'm doing things that I've never done before, and getting perspectives that have never occurred to me, likely one a result of the other.

For one thing, I'm walking all the time, everywhere I go, and I'm walking like a concussed Alzheimer's patient (no disrespect intended to everyone I've ever met in my entire life), and I'm doing it on purpose. It was one of the lessons of Willoughby in the Twilight Zone. Remember the tagline? "Peaceful, restful, where a man can slow down to a walk, and live his life full measure." I'm finding myself thinking about things I never have before, in ways I've never considered. I'll likely be posting a lot more discussions soon, rather than the daily journal kind of thing.

Of all the Twilight Zone features of this town, and let's face it, the Twilight Zone was literally why I came here, the most Twilight Zone-ish feature of the situation is that a real town called Willoughby, which there is no proof was the inspiration of the TZ episode, turned out to actually be as idyllic as the fantasy version, and on top of that, my ending to the episode is lightspeed better than the one Rod Serling gave it--and a much happier one.

I take this as proof that a toad in a well sees only a part of the sky, and it's not about how right or wrong he is about what he knows, it's about the fact he never considered leaving the well. Once he does, he discovers that his rightness and wrongness is no longer relevant, because none of it was rooted in all the information--just what was available to his mind at the time.

With fundamental interests considered and well-managed, when we refuse to let reality crush our fantasy life, we sometimes can change our reality in ways we cannot currently conceive.

Sometimes it's not our understanding that fails us, it's our imagination.
